But there are signs that all that is changing. Until recently, only 25% of Americans even had a passport. That number has now risen to 37%.
Going beyond just a vacation in another country, many Americans should look into owning a second home or retirement property abroad. Given the continuing dollar devaluation, economic and social situation in the US, planning for a future outside the country is becoming a priority for many with the means. In fact, the number of Americans purchasing a second home abroad rose by 8% in 2009 alone.
It just makes sense to put your money into tangible assets offshore. As times continue to worsen, the US government will be looking for more and more ways to raise funds to pay it's huge debt. This will mean higher and higher taxes for many. It may be more difficult in the future to invest abroad.
So what about Thailand? If you have ever been here, you know it is absolutely wonderful and one of the most beautiful places on Earth.
Thailand offers much to Americans seeking to their retirement haven. Perhaps the most attractive feature is cost. Thailand is among the most affordable places to live in the world. Food and transportation are cheap. You don't have to worry about heating bills, and you only need air conditioning on average 2 or 3 months of the year.
The people of Thailand are amazingly warm and friendly. (It is not known as "The Land of Smiles" for nothing!) The society is strong on family values and tradition. In general, you will find Thailand to be a freer society than today's America; taxes and regulations are much less of a burden here.
Probably the best investment for an American in Thailand is a condominium. You can own a beach front condo for as little as about $30,000 USD. Here are some examples in our listings:
Example 1 (pg 32) -- $30,150 USD
Example 2 (pg 25) -- $36,850 USD
While the above condos may be suitable as a second home, larger units on the beach are available:
Example 1 (pg 23) -- $55,275 USD
Example 2 (pg 30) -- $93,800 USD
You may have noticed that all these units are in the seaside resort community of Cha-am. We will be covering this charming town in much more detail future posts; you can also visit or All About Cha-am page for photos and video.
For now, suffice it to say that Cha-am is probably the best place to invest in property right now. That's because the forecast is for property values in the area to increase in future years because of increasing development and interest in the area, which has heretofore been overlooked. The good news is, there are still incredible bargains to be had!
In the next post, we will cover the other types of property and your investment options in Thailand. Meanwhile, you can visit our Purchasing Property in Thailand page for more information on the rules regarding foreigners owning real estate here.
