Cicadas are found in Thailand and are about the same size as the North American variety. The Asian species of cicadas also "sing", making a loud sound. Only males sing, and it is to attract a mate. Cicadas also make a sort of distress call if alarmed. The sound is produced by structures on the insect's abdomen called "tymbals".
The coloration of the two species is markedly different, owing to their different environments and particularly the surrounding vegetation.
Cicadas feed on plants; they mainly eat tree sap.
There are about 2,500 different species of cicadas and they typically live in temperate or tropical climates.
Cicadas are eaten by humans; they can be skewered, deep fried or stir fried and are considered by some to be a delicacy.
